Granular Flows and Gas-fluidization

چکیده

This paper examines the roles that granular flow theory might play in the modeling the solid-phase stresses in fluidized beds. It begins with a discussion of the historical limiting cases of the quasistatic and rapid-flow regimes. It then reviews the elastic granular theories that unify those two regimes. Finally it shows that measurements of solid-phase pressures cannot be explained by commonly used rapid-flow theories and mostly likely lie in the elastic flow regimes.

Convection and fluidization in oscillatory granular flows: The role of acoustic streaming.

Convection and fluidization phenomena in vibrated granular beds have attracted a strong interest from the physics community since the last decade of the past century. As early reported by Faraday, the convective flow of large inertia particles in vibrated beds exhibits enigmatic features such as frictional weakening and the unexpected influence of the interstitial gas. At sufficiently intense v...

Mixing Behaviors of Wet Granular Materials in Gas Fluidized Beds

The mixing behaviors of dry and wet granular materials in gas fluidized bed systems were investigated computationally using the combined Computational Fluid Dynamics and Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM). Dry particles were observed to mix fairly rapidly during the fluidization process due to vigorous relative motions between particles induced by the flow of gas. In contrast, due to the presenc...

Unified rheology of vibro-fluidized dry granular media: From slow dense flows to fast gas-like regimes

Granular media take on great importance in industry and geophysics, posing a severe challenge to materials science. Their response properties elude known soft rheological models, even when the yield-stress discontinuity is blurred by vibro-fluidization. Here we propose a broad rheological scenario where average stress sums up a frictional contribution, generalizing conventional μ(I)-rheology, a...

Effects of coupling on turbulent gas-particle boundary layer flows at borderline volume fractions using kinetic theory

This study is concerned with the prediction of particles’ velocity in a dilute turbulent gas-solidboundary layer flow using a fully Eulerian two-fluid model. The closures required for equationsdescribing the particulate phase are derived from the kinetic theory of granular flows. Gas phaseturbulence is modeled by one-equation model and solid phase turbulence by MLH theory. Resultsof one-way and...

Transverse instability of avalanches in granular flows down an incline.

Avalanche experiments on an erodible substrate are analyzed using the "partial fluidization" model of dense granular flows. The model identifies a family of propagating solitonlike avalanches with shape and velocity controlled by the inclination angle and the depth of the substrate. At high inclination angles, the solitons display a transverse instability, followed by coarsening and fingering s...
